What is Clear Lens Exchange/Refractive Lens Exchange?

Clear Lens Exchange, also known as Refractive Lens Exchange, is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. An ICON Eyecare surgeon simply swaps the natural lens in your eye with an advanced intraocular lens. The procedure is practically identical to cataract surgery, the only difference is that instead of removing a lens with a cataract, we remove a clear lens before a cataract can even develop.

Clear Lens Exchange is a great choice for patients who experience dry eyes, have thin corneas, or presbyopia. The great thing about CLE is that you can choose from any of the advanced technology lenses that ICON offers. These lenses allow most patients to get out of glasses and contacts – and you never have to worry about cataracts!

CLE is more similar to cataract surgery than it is to LASIK (where a laser is used to reshape the cornea) but the end goal for patients who opt for CLE is to get rid of their glasses and contacts. ICON Eyecare’s team of experts has the expertise to get you there.

What to Expect from CLE at ICON Eyecare?

Your experienced ICON Eyecare doctor will do a complete eye examination using the latest technology to determine which procedure is best for you and your eye health. If CLE is right for you, our team will help you choose a lens that best fits your lifestyle and we’ll give you an overview of the procedure; including preparation and recovery for optimal results.

What Type of Lenses Are Available with CLE?

Different lens types are ideal for patients with different lifestyles. If you work in an office, you would need a different lens from somebody who is outdoors all day long. Our team of experts will go over the available lens types with you and help you to choose one that works perfectly for you.

Will I Make a Good CLE Candidate?

Clear Lens Exchange isn’t the best option for every patient, but if you have thin corneas, presbyopia, or dry eye syndrome, CLE may be a great option for you. CLE can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism and is particularly useful in resolving early onset cataracts in young people.

Even if CLE isn’t right for you, ICON Eyecare’s medical ophthalmology experience means we can offer multiple vision correction options. The best way to find out how we can help you see the moments that matter is to speak with our team. We look forward to seeing you in our clinic soon!
