If you’re not a candidate for LASIK, don’t worry! ICON Eyecare has expertise in performing other procedures that can correct your vision, allowing you to enjoy life without contacts and glasses. Let’s explore your options!

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

PRK is a vision correction surgery that is similar to LASIK. It has successfully helped millions of people in the U.S. and around the world see more clearly for over three decades.

PRK pre-dates LASIK, but in both cases, a laser is used to address refractive problems on the corneal surface. Often used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, PRK is a “flap-free” procedure that may be available to a wider variety of patients. Because of the similar outcomes, PRK is a common LASIK alternative.

How is PRK Different from LASIK?

The main difference between PRK and LASIK is how the surgeon accesses your cornea during the procedure. With LASIK, a thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea. With PRK, the thin outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is gently swabbed away to allow the surgeon to access the treatment area. This outer layer naturally regenerates

after surgery. Due to the nature of the procedure, PRK will include a longer recovery time than LASIK. The results appear more gradually, and vision improvements will take longer to stabilize. However, PRK is a safe and effective alternative for patients with thin corneas or other restrictions who may not qualify for LASIK.

Visian Implantable Contact Lens (ICL)

Similar to LASIK, Visian ICL is a type of corrective eye surgery that can help treat common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, it involves inserting an implantable collamer lens (ICL) into the eye, which works with the natural lens to improve your vision.

Visian ICL is a non-invasive outpatient procedure, usually performed in 15 to 30 minutes. The recovery time is minimal, with most people experiencing improvements to their vision in as little as 24 hours.

How is Visian ICL Different From LASIK?

Unlike LASIK, Visian ICL is well-suited for patients with chronically dry eyes or thin or abnormally shaped corneas. Visian ICL is an implantable contact lens which helps your eye to see clearly, while LASIK involves re-shaping your cornea with a laser to achieve the same vision correction.
