Corneal Surgery

ICON Eyecare Specializes in a Range of Cornea Treatments

The cornea is the transparent layer that forms the front of the eye. It helps control how light enters the eye and makes up a significant portion of the eye’s overall focusing power. This major role means corneal damage or weakening can have a major impact on visual clarity.

Several common eye issues are related to the cornea. Some effect sight while others are simply an inconvenience. ICON Eyecare has specialized surgeons in all our office locations to treat a range of cornea issues.

  • Common Cornea Issues and Treatments

Keratoconus is the thinning of the cornea, often resulting in an abnormal cone-like shape. This changes the way light enters the eye and affects the patient’s vision. When surgical intervention is required, Intacs ® can be used or in some cases a corneal transplant is necessary. Intacs® are tiny, clear, semi-circular inserts that are placed in the peripheral layer of the cornea to help reshape the steep area of the cornea.

Corneal cross linking (CXL) is a minimally invasive treatment that combines the use of Vitamin B2 solution eye drops and UV light to slow or stop the progression of corneal disorders such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, ectasia, or post RK (refractive keratotomy) corneas.

Pterygium is a common eye growth in adults which can be caused by significant exposure to sunlight or wind while outdoors. The growth is non-cancerous and typically painless but can impact sight and cause eye discomfort. The growth can be removed surgically, and is generally covered by insurance providers.

Prokera ® is a natural therapeutic device used to treat and heal damaged and infected corneas along with a variety of corneal diseases. This treatment is less painful and results in less scarring and inflammation than other treatment options. It is the only cryopreserved amniotic membrane approved by the FDA for wound healing.

Dry eye symptoms are experienced by most people living in Colorado. Persistent issues coupled with a variety of additional symptoms can indicate a larger issue.
