  • What Causes Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a chronic disease that usually has a multifactor cause. Women and anyone over the age of 50 are at a significantly higher risk to develop dry eye symptoms. The most common contributing factors to dry eye are:

    • Environment
    • Smoking
    • Certain medical conditions including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome, thyroid disorders, and rosacea
    • Certain medications, including antihistamines, decongestants, hormone replacement therapy, antidepressants, drugs for high blood pressure, acne, birth control, and Parkinson’s disease
    • Laser eye surgery, although usually temporary
    • Contact Lenses
    • Computer work
    • Radiation therapy
  • Why Are Tears Important?

Your tears are made up of a combination of oil and water providing nutrition, lubrication and immune protection for your eyes. Proper lubrication is needed for a smooth ocular surface, without which clear vision is not possible. When you don’t have enough tears, your eyes become irritated starting a cycle of inflammation that may lead to infection, permanent damage, and vision loss.

  • Dry Eye Treatments

If you exhibit signs of dry eye, the following are potential options for treatment:

    • Serum Tears are made from your own blood. Red blood cells and clotting factors are removed, leaving behind blood serum. This is diluted with a sterile, preservative-free solution to produce a tear substitute that is unique to you, and contains many important growth factors and nutrients normally found in healthy tears. Since blood and tears have an almost identical salinity and pH, there is no issue of burning or stinging upon instillation.
    • Punctal Plugs keep your natural tears on your eyes longer. This can be done by blocking the tear ducts through which the tears normally drain. The tear ducts can be blocked with tiny silicone or gel-like plugs that can be removed, if needed. In either case, the goal is to keep the available tears in the eye longer to reduce problems related to dry eyes.
    • Eyelid Expression is an in office procedure that opens the glands and stimulates new tear production.
    • Prescription Eye Drops that work by helping to increase the production of tears.
