Patients suffering from mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma now have access to an exciting new treatment option that has been shown to help reduce pressure in the eye and may slow the progression of glaucoma for some patients. The iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass is one of the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA and has the potential to replace hypotensive eye drops for some glaucoma patients.
How Does the iStent® work?
This micro-bypass device improves the natural outflow of the thin fluid between the cornea and iris (called aqueous humor), lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma. Better management of IOP decreases the risk of blindness in glaucoma patients.
An iStent® can be implanted during your normal cataract surgery and will not significantly increase the length of the procedure or the risks associated with cataract eye surgery. Once in place, most patients will not feel the stent.
Is the iStent® Right for Me?
iStent® is a good option for adult patients who are on a lifetime regimen of ocular hypotensive medication. This is a permanent solution for lowering IOP. This means intraocular pressure is continuously stabilized, decreasing the likelihood of pressure spikes that contribute heavily to vision impairment in patients with glaucoma.
