iStent ®

Patients suffering from mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma now have access to an exciting new treatment option designed to help reduce pressure in the eye and slow the progression of glaucoma. The iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass is the smallest medical device ever approved by the FDA and has the potential to replace hypotensive eye drops for glaucoma patients.

  • How Does the iStent® work?

    iStent 2

This micro-bypass device improves the natural outflow of the thin fluid between the cornea and iris (called aqueous humor), lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma. Better management of IOP decreases the risk of blindness in glaucoma patients.

An iStent® can be implanted during your normal cataract surgery and will not significantly increase the length of the procedure or the risks associated with cataract eye surgery. Once in place, you will not feel the stent.

  • Is the iStent® Right for Me?

iStent® is a good option for adult patients who are on a lifetime regimen of ocular hypotensive medication. This is a permanent solution for lowering IOP which means intraocular pressure is continuously stabilized, decreasing the likelihood of pressure spikes that contribute heavily to vision impairment in patients with glaucoma. Patients who manage IOP with medication must be careful not to miss a dose, whereas patients with iStent® no longer have to worry about managing this issue as medication is often no longer needed.

Talk to your ICON Eyecare doctor to see if an iStent® can help you manage your mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma and cataracts.
