Understanding the Cost of Cataract Surgery

At ICON Eyecare, we know cost is an important consideration in your decision to have cataract surgery. We’re here to provide the information and resources you need to understand potential expenses and plan your procedure.

To begin with, the average cost of cataract surgery varies from patient to patient based on several factors, and it can be difficult to give an exact amount. Many patients use health insurance, including Medicare, Medicaid, employer-sponsored plans, and private insurance, to help pay for the procedure. Cataract surgery is subject to deductibles, copays, or coinsurance. Some plans have coverage limits that may not pay for all related services, such as diagnostic exams, pre-surgery consultations, or certain advanced technologies or upgrades. This means you may have an out-of-pocket cost. Out-of-pocket upgrade costs at ICON Eyecare can range between $2,200 and $5,200 per eye.

Three primary considerations can influence cataract surgery costs:

  • Clock with check mark
    Symptom Severity

Health insurance companies often look at the cataract stage when determining coverage. While some policies may cover cataract surgery regardless of stage, most will only pay when cataracts interfere with your ability to work or perform daily tasks and surgery is deemed “medically necessary.”

    Lens Choice

Insurance coverage and costs depend on the type of artificial intraocular lens (IOL) you choose. Typically, insurance will only cover a standard monofocal lens, but many advanced technology IOLs can deliver more customized results and freedom from glasses to help you achieve your lifestyle and vision goals. Choosing an advanced technology lens, such as a toric lens that corrects astigmatism, a multi-focal lens that allows clear vision both close up and far away, or a premium lens that offers customized results using post-surgery light treatments, may result in a higher out-of-pocket cost.

Advanced techniques such as laser cataract surgery (also called laser-assisted cataract surgery) and ORA system testing™ can offer more personalized treatment and precise visual outcomes; however, some insurance plans may not cover these technologies.

Affordable Payment Options for Cataract Surgery

Our goal is to give every patient the opportunity for excellent vision. If you do not have insurance or if your plan does not cover cataract surgery, our team can discuss other payment options we offer:

  • Financing: We offer flexible payment plans and interest-free financing through Alphaeon Credit and CareCredit. You may qualify for 0% interest for up to 24 months with no money down with approved credit, as well as extended payment options for up to five years. Your surgical counselor can help answer any questions and assist you with completing the application process at your consultation.
  • Health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs): If you have one of these accounts, you can use pretax dollars to pay for medical expenses not typically covered by insurance, including cataract surgery. You can use these funds to cover all or part of your procedure.
