Planning on having cataract eye surgery? Perhaps you’ve heard about different lens options for cataract surgery and are wondering what the difference is between the different kinds. Premium intraocular lenses offer a great option for cataract surgery. Because cataract surgery can only be carried out once on an eye, it’s important to choose the right lens for you and your lifestyle.

What is a Premium Intraocular Lens?

An intraocular lens (IOL) is a device that is implanted into the eye during surgery, either for cataracts or a refractive lens exchange. The intraocular lens acts as a replacement for the eye’s natural lens which is removed during the surgery. Before IOLs were developed, those who had undergone cataract surgery would have to wear specialized thick glasses or contact lenses.

Monofocal

A regular IOL is monofocal, and the majority of people will still require some vision aid like glasses or contact lenses to be able to see at various distances. Many people who choose to have a monofocal IOL choose to have it for long distance and then use glasses for reading.

Toric IOL

An additional type of premium IOL is a toric lens, which is used to treat people with astigmatism. The lens can actually correct the vision problem created by the astigmatism, eliminating your need for glasses.

Multifocal Lens Implants

A premium intraocular lens can be multifocal or allow the person to accommodate. This means a person can see at different distances (near, far and middle distances) without needing glasses.

ReSTOR - Toric (multifocal)

Symfony (multifocal)

  • Delivering excellent uncorrected visual acuity (VA) at all distances, the TECNIS Symfony® IOL allows patients to see clearly across a full range of vision. Rather than splitting light into distinct focal points, the TECNIS Symfony® IOL elongates focus, resulting in an increased depth of field. This empowers you to see a full range of continuous vision while maintaining high image contrast.

AcrySof IQ Toric

  • The proven performance of AcrySof® IQ Toric IOLs can allow astigmatic cataract patients to meet their vision goals with less dependence on glasses or contacts for distance vision.

Each of these premium lens types has the power to enhance a wide range of patients’ vision. Provided you select the right lens for your specific needs, your vision will be clearer and brighter after cataract surgery.

During your consultation, your ICON doctor will ask about your lifestyle and long term vision goals, then help you decide which type of lens will be best suited to help you achieve those goals.
