Who Should Consider a Trifocal IOL?

While all premium IOLs are designed to improve patients’ vision, trifocal lenses (which fall into the category of multifocal/lifestyle IOLs) are crafted to improve patients’ vision at multiple distances. This makes them an ideal fit for patients who lead active lifestyles that involve routinely switching between tasks that require clear close-range vision (think: reading a book or working on a computer) and clear long-range vision (think: jogging or driving a car).

The AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal IOL is also available in spherical and toric formats, making it a great fit for patients with astigmatism. Once their eye has healed after surgery, most astigmatism patients will no longer need to rely on glasses. It’s important to note that, in rare cases, a trifocal IOL may end up moving following surgery, resulting in distorted vision. If this occurs, a patient should contact their ICON Eyecare specialist immediately, as additional surgery may be required.

Understanding Trifocal Lenses

If you have a cataract and want to regain crisp, clear vision, you must get your cataract-clouded natural lens replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The newest type of IOL to enter the market, trifocal lenses are designed for patients who want to address their cataract symptoms and eliminate their reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

Like all premium replacement lenses, a trifocal IOL fuses with the eye’s structure as a patient recovers from cataract surgery. Over the course of approximately four weeks, patients who receive a trifocal lens will begin to notice clearer vision that will boost their enjoyment of all of life’s activities — from reading a book to taking a long walk.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Trifocal IOL?

According to a recent clinical study, more than 99.9 percent of patients with a trifocal lens said they would choose to receive a trifocal lens again. But is a trifocal IOL the best option for you?
