Meet Dr. Richard Stiverson

Richard Stiverson, MD is a refractive cataract surgery specialist. Following graduation from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, he completed residency training at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology. This was followed by six months of daily cataract surgery and teaching. Dr. Stiverson moved to Connecticut where he helped create one of the largest ophthalmology practices in New England. He was among the first doctors in the United States to insert modern intraocular lenses using ultrasonic removal. Dr. Stiverson was the Medical Director of the first two Medicare-Certified Ophthalmic Ambulatory Surgery Centers to open in Connecticut, which were also among the first in the United States.

Given a desire to focus primarily on surgery, Dr. Stiverson returned to Colorado to join Kaiser-Permanente and his former Connecticut partner, Dr. David Litoff. They were among the first ophthalmologists in the U.S. to perform cataract surgery with minimal sedation. Dr. Stiverson has performed over 45,000 cataract procedures including more same-day bilateral surgery than anyone in the United States.

Dr. Stiverson is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the largest group of American and International surgeons in the world focused on this specialty. He served on the Cataract Committee for 5 years and is currently the senior judge for the annual scientific poster competition.
